thank you. good morning, everybody. it is friday, we're glad about that, it's november the 2nd. good to have you with us. it's 6:00. >> it is. well, the unemployment has bounced up again. the jobs report was just released a few minutes ago. cate caugiran down in the newsroom with the very latest on the numbers. >> reporter: frank and michelle, the numbers show that more jobs were added in october. let's take a look. the numbers show the u.s. economy added 171,000 jobs in october right now unemployment rate is now at 7.9%. that's up from september's report which put us at 7.8%. now, that was the first dip below 8 since before the president took office. in terms of voters, some experts say these numbers are unlikely to sway them. >> if you are a person that feels that the general recovery that we have had has not been as much as it should have been, then you have already made up your mind probably not to vote

for the president for re- election. if you are conversely someone who feels that the president inherited the mess and it's turning around a ship slowly to fix this thing and you generally like where he is with his other programs, you have also already made up your mind. >> reporter: both candidates will be kick-starting their final push before tuesday's big election. president obama and mitt romney will be in the battleground state of ohio. political analysts say this could be the state to decide the electoral vote. again, this report is the last one to come out before election day. one that each candidate will definitely use for their advantage. while experts don't believe it will have a big impact on swing voters, we don't know if it will affect the stock market. >> thank you. the death toll keeps getting higher in the 10 states devastated by superstorm sandy. at least 92 people have been killed by the storm that struck sunday. on new york's staten island, searchers found the bodies of two young children who were

swept from their mother's arms. also, in new york, a man was arrested for pulling a gun when he tried to cut into a gas line. cbs reporter randall pinkston joins us from the jersey shore with the problems people there are facing. >> reporter: that gun pulling stunt puts you on edge em if you are in a gas line like many of us are. you know, every day the public officials hold news conferences to talk about what's being accomplished. a lot is being accomplished. for example, we have utility workers from around the country helping to restore power. but when you have people who have no heat, no power, people standing in gas lines, it's understandable that tempers are fraying. reporter: you didn't have to look hard to find frustrated people. there were long lines to get gas and long lines to get into new york city, as police enforced a three-person per vehicle rule. traffic will only get better when all of the tunnels and subway lines are clear of water.

and the pumps are operating 24 hours a day to speed up the process. but one look at this tunnel connecting manhattan and brooklyn shows just how much work is still left to be done. the nights are especially hard for people without electricity. >> we've been cold some nights. >> dark and cold. >> reporter: con ed says it will have power back on tomorrow for hundreds of thousands of people in manhattan. that's good news for elaine and mark. they have been stuck in their 20th floor apartment without elevator service since the storm knocked out power. >> coming up is really a hardship for us. >> that's why we stayed up here. >> reporter: here in new jersey, police began allowing people who live along the coast back into their homes for the first time since the storm. for many, it was an emotional homecoming. >> got upset. we lost everything we had. it's nothing we can do. >> reporter: vicente juarez says the water rose 3 feet high in his stafford township home.

he spent the afternoon throwing everything away. damage from sandy is estimated at $50 billion. >> reporter: unfortunately a lot of people don't have insurance. another concern in new jersey, the water supply. governor chris christie has ordered a water emergency telling everyone they need to conserve. reporting live in stafford township. i'm randall pinkston. back to you. >> have you heard, are there people still trapped by these floodwaters? >> reporter: in hoboken, we think most of the people have been rescued. there are obviously some difficulties getting to everyone to make sure but it's been a very, very huge operation under way for the past few days. you know, hoboken floods even in a normal rain. this was an extraordinary event and no one anticipated what would happen in that disaster. >> no kidding. devastating as you're talking.

you're looking at live pictures of new jersey right now. so you take care out there randall and thank you for that live report. new york's mayor michael bloomberg has decided to go ahead with sunday's scheduled new york city marathon. there's some criticism about the decision. but the mayor says the race will show the city's resilience and it will be a financial boost for the city. lawrence is out and about with the preview of the bay area science festival. what are you doing? >> oh, yeah. guys, i got to get this plane built. let me tell you, we're working on this really -- oh, i think i just bent the wing. [ laughter ] >> we'll have to do a little redo on that. but we're here enjoining the science festival at the tech museum of innovation. it's a great chance for you to bring the kids down. the whole family. there's something for everyone if you want to do it. it's taking place today and this weekend. so get down here and enjoy it if you want to do that. tell you what the weather is going to be great. we're looking at a lot of sunshine toward the afternoon.

just a couple of high clouds drifting by. it's a little chilly in spots. some 40s and 50s. we are looking' patchy fog in the valleys so watch out for that. through the day, that should lift. high clouds will drift through but temperatures will be mild mainly in the 60s and 70s. but you know what? as we look toward the weekend that ridge really taking over. temperatures could soar back into the 80s. we'll have more on that and more about the festival here and i'm going to see if i can get this thing to fly. so far, so good. it looks good so far on paper. elizabeth, we'll find out if it works. >> thank you. let's go out live towards the bay bridge. overall we're still doing great. this is a live look at those cars waiting to get through the pay gates. looks like slight delays in the cash lanes but the good news is no metering lights yet. things look good especially in the middle fastrak lane. elsewhere, to our maps. and other live traffic cameras. live look at the san mateo bridge. the right side of your screen

that's the commute direction. so all those cars heading out of hayward still look good. they did wrap up that overnight roadwork in the westbound lanes. carquinez bridge eastbound lanes of interstate 80 everything is reopened. actually it hasn't. the eastbound lanes approaching crockett and the carquinez bridge toll plaza still blocking one lane. caltrains is paving scheduled it wrap up by 8:00 this morning. so a few brake lights now on highway 4 your usual spots and westbound 580 through the altamont pass. mass transit still on time. that is traffic. back to you guys. >> thank you. 6:07. a violent attack here in san francisco at a muni station all caught on camera. cbs 5 reporter anne makovec tells us police say an angry bicyclist went after a station agent who got roughed up. >> reporter: he is going to be okay but still not back at work. the suspect was last seen out on the streets here at market and van ness. but he did get away and police

are hoping this new security video will help track him down. it was taken on october 10 around 7:40 p.m. you can see the suspect running down the stairs with his bike after the agent told him bikes weren't allowed. the agent was following him. the suspect spins around and starts punching and kick the agent who is just out of the camera's view there. that agent is 55 years old. he was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. he is out of the hospital but he is still not back at work. there is surveillance video taken via the municipal transportation agency security cameras and there are witnesses on the platform watching this and if any of those folks have not yet had an opportunity to speak to investigators, we're asking them to come forward. >> the suspect is caucasian between 25 and 30 years old about 6 feet tall with brown hair. now, if you want to get another look at that video, you think you might know this guy, we have it for you on our website, cbssf.com. live in san francisco, anne makovec, cbs 5.

>> anne, thank you. police say the riots after the giants world series sweep sunday are all part of a recent surge of violence in the mission district. and now the department is beefing up patrols there. expect to see more officers near the 24th street and 16th street bart stations in the mission. the neighborhood has seen 4 homicides in the past two weeks. an anticrime project known as operation impact is under way in two northern california cities. the california highway patrol is providing extra officers to oakland and stockton. chp officers will be in oakland two days a week at no cost to the city. help from the chp will allow the city's police department to increase patrols in high crime areas. >> the program is set to run for at least the next three months. residence in fairfield are helping police search for a couple accused of stealing mail. one man set up a surveillance camera and put the red flag up on his mailbox. the video shows an altima pulling up in broad daylight

and a woman gets out and grabbed the mail. one victim said she had a check stolen which was copied and turned into fake payments. a new timeline out from the u.s. officials about just how long it took for help to arrive at that u.s. consulate in benghazi, libya. intelligence officials say cia officers went to the aid of state department staff in benghazi less than 25 minutes after the first call came in for help. timeline appears to be an effort to rebut a fox news report that claims the cia told its personnel to stand down rather than to go to that comings lat. >> time now 6:10. a mother deer shot with an arrow in the east bay. >> now animals services is asking neighbors to help track her down. >> oh, my god. that's shocking. >> and hot lingerie as in stolen. $11,000 worth of bras swiped from a victoria's secret. how the thieves pulled it off without anyone noticing. ,,

you get to do some real hands on stuff so you can understand how things work. >> it's true. you know, bay area science festival is all about unleashing your inyour scientists and tech museum. we want to help unleash your inner science. >> reporter: totally for geeks like me but it's fun. you know what, if you want to come down here it's a great weekend. we'll have nice weather. we are starting out with patchy dense fog early on. some of that showing up in the north and east bay valleys. we are expecting plenty of sunshine by the afternoon and those temperatures going to be moving up into the 60s and 70s. high pressure now building in overhead and with that ridge building in i think we are setting up a very nice weekend. lots of sunshine, some warm temperatures going to be showing up especially in some of the valleys. you will see some of the temperatures maybe moving up into the 80s as we head toward the latter part of the weekend. here in the south bay we are expecting temperatures in the upper 60s into san jose. traveling toward the east bay you will find high clouds and sunshine.

temperatures in the 70s and 60s. insided bay cooler but not bad. it should be not bad. temperatures in the 60s. warmer on the weekend, dry, peaking with temperatures in the 80s by monday. cooling off as we head in toward tuesday and wednesday. so yeah, i say geeks but i say that in a nice way. people that want to learn about neat things, this is a great place to do it, liz. >> sounds great, science, superheros, building planes. lawrence is in heaven this morning. things are getting busy on the eastshore freeway and westbound 580 so some of our usual slow spots in the east bay starting to get slow now. you can see it. those headlights moving westbound into the dublin- pleasanton area. let's go to our maps check the drive time. we have brake lights as far back as the altamont pass. it just is slow and go as we like to say from 205 out of tracecy through livermore. no issues for bart, ace, muni, caltrain and ferries.

everything on schedule. you may want to use bart, by the way, planning on heading to the cal game later on tonight. they play university of washington at 6 p.m. so officials sent out an alert. they are expecting heavy traffic all the way on city streets in berkeley and coming down the eastshore freeway, westbound 80. so once again, use bart. that's your best option. otherwise, golden gate bridge traffic looks good all your bridges pretty much problem- free at this hour and we just got word that they were able to fix those defective traffic lights that were causing issues on doyle drive in the marina boulevard approach. they for a while had to do some traffic control in the area. now everything is back to normal. and things look good for your marin county drive into san francisco. that is a check of your "timesaver traffic." traffic and weather together every 10 minutes. back to you guys. there is a delay of lab work on a cold case in the bay area of a bone fragment may be

month. the u.s. economy added 171,000 jobs in october showing the job market is gradually gaining momentum but unemployment increased up to 7.9% up from september's 7.8% because the workforce grew. and mitt romney just came out saying the october jobs report is a sad reminder the economy is at a virtual standstill. we are still waiting to hear the president's comments on it. and cbsmoneywatch reporter jason brooks will have much more on the market reaction to the jobs report in 15 minutes. 6:30 now. an angry bicyclist assaults a muni station agent and it's all caught on camera. cbs 5 reporter anne makovec in san francisco with that newly released surveillance video. >> good morning. police hope this is going to catch that suspect. that mind agent was badly injured. he is out of the hospital but he is still not back at work here at the muni station behind me on van ness and market. here is that surveillance video that police have just released hoping it will help catch the suspect in this case.

down halloween night as he was closing down his store. 50-year-old wilbur bartley was described as an oakland raider fan and reliable cell phone salesman who often times made special arrangements for financially struggling customers to pay their bills. >> he was always giving the kids raider tickets, kids would come in if they were hungry he would give them money to feed them. >> personally saddened by this very senseless act of violence and i pledge to this family and this community that we'll forge as many resources as we can to finding the killer. >> police say a number of shots were fired when bartley was killed. the search is on for a couple of serial mail thieves in fairfield. one victim set up a surveillance camera and caught the couple on camera. the video shows a silver nissan altima pulling up in broad daylight. a woman gets out as you will see in just a second, grabs the mail and then another victim says she had a mortgage check

stolen which was copied and turned into fake payments. deputies say two men may be behind a 7-eleven heist out of half moon bay. the take, more than $7,500. surveillance video caught them entering the store on monday. according to the deputies, one man asked the clerk about lottery tickets. the other suspect went into an office and grabbed a bag of cash. store workers didn't realize they had been robbed until a few hours later. $7,500 is a lot of money. it's the second annual bay area science festival and our mad scientist is taking part. you were building a plane earlier. >> reporter: i am building a plane. we'll see if it flies in a few minutes. good question if it will fly. but had it's neat down here at the tech museum of innovation. if you haven't been here it's a great place for the family. it's a neat place where you can do a lot of hands on experimenting to see how some of the scientists have innovated some of the neat things that we find in everyday devices. some of the neat things they are working on now they are

other popular choices were posey and scutaro but romo won the number one concern among voters is the economy. an hour ago we learned the job market is gaining momentum. we'll get the number and wall street's early reaction from jason brooks with kcbs and cbsmoneywatch.com on a friday. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the october employment report coming in much better than expected. labor department reporting a gain of 171,000 jobs last month, that's about 45,000 more than what economists were expecting to see. the unemployment rate did go up higher from 7.8 to 7.9%. that was a reflection of more people resuming their search for work. on top of the gain last month labor department also revised higher august and september by a combined 84,000 jobs. over the past few month, we have seen a better began in jobs of around 173,000 compared to 67,000 in the spring. really need to see gains of 250,000 or more to really help chip away at the high ranks of unemployed in the economy.

earnings reports this morning, chevron a big drop in profit in the last quarter down about 33% to $5.25 billion. revenue is down also. missed expectations by around $8 billion. the company had lower natural gas and oil production also higher maintenance costs including the big fire at its richmond refinery. >> linkedin proves it's one of the better social media companies turning a profit of over a couple of million dollars in the recent quarter after a loss the year earlier. markets have modest gains. we had a nice day yesterday so some of the gains baked in early. the dow up only by 5 points right now. nasdaq higher b a fraction as well as the s&p. earnings reports have been poor for the 3rd quarter fourth not looking better. back to you guys. >> thank you, jason brooks with kcbs and cbsmoneywatch.com. new this morning, a couple of die-hard apple fans are lining up for the new ipad mini. this is in san francisco
